One of my absolute favorite blogs is Scott’s McLeod's Dangerously Irrelevant. He has posted a series of posts this week on Change (resources, quotes, and change diagrams.) Scott is obviously a man of my own heart. Most of the books he has listed are from outside the education establishment. As those who know me well have often observed, I do very little reading from the inside the education establishment. I figure someone will tell me about it or I will hear it in a staff development meeting.
I want to think thoughts and approach situations in a way that those around me are not. This is where I can be most valuable. If everybody is thinking the same thing, then innovation and change will be impossible. I want to think differently and approach problems from a different perspective.
One of my favorite books describes this view in perfect detail. Orbiting the Giant Hairball by Gordon MacKenzie describes how one can “orbit” the organization and view it from different perspectives. I am a better agent of change when I am “orbiting” the educational “hairball.”
