Wow. This is really interesting stuff! I hadn't really thought about the ways in which digital media allows us to think around certain problems, however, I have some pushback.

I think lateral thinking is needed, and always has been. The digital age is only highlighting and giving greater attention to this kind of thinking. But vertical/linear thinking is what allows us to bring things into alignment. Lateral thinking may explore and add information and welcome new ideas, but vertical thinking will make sure that the new information fits.

I don't think it is an "either-or" situation here. It is definitely a "both-and." Our future will require the ability to search far and wide and explore laterally -- faster and better than we have ever had to -- but it will require greatly focused and disciplined vertical thinking in order to make those connections work.

The very systems upon which are digital resources run -- created and maintained by vertical thinking.

I agree. I think it is a "both and.." situation. I feel like analytical thinking is dominating our current educational thinking. We need both.

Excellent points.
